Welcome to York Carnival – Here is your chance to meet the wonderful people whose amazing efforts are bringing you this year’s Carnival. We all have very different roles and each is vital in contributing to the running of this event. Put faces to the names and say hi to us!
Chair
Bethan is this year’s Carnival Committee Chair. After taking on the responsibility of Carnival Manager last year, she is now running the event and with the help of a committed and productive team is ensuring that the day is a fantastic success. Bethan is in her final year of an undergraduate degree in Archaeology and will be staying in York next year to complete and MA in Buildings Archaeology.

Vice – Chair
Emma McMullen is currently in her third year at York University, studying Historical Archaeology. She is now Vice-Chair for York Carnival after being on the events team for the 2009 Carnival. She has been involved with local archaeology projects and with English Heritage, and enjoys archery, squash, travelling and writing. She feels that being Vice-Chair will be a challenging and rewarding experience.
Treasurer
Sebastian Weir is currently a Third Year Archaeologist at the University. He was involved in last years Carnival in a minor way, and wished to increase his responsibilities. He has been involved in a variety of University Clubs and societies, and remains a keen Rugby Union player. He is looking forward to making Carnival 2010 a success and enjoyable for all.
Carnival Manager
Charlie is a second year student studying history at the University of York, and will be Carnival Manager this year. He is involved in a number of clubs and societies at the University, including the committees of the Surf Club and the College Rugby League, and is currently helping set up a new History magazine called Fable. Last year he helped steward the carnival and enjoyed it so much that he wanted to do more this year.

Marketing Director
My name is Beth Fryer and I am this year’s Marketing Director. I am a second year history student at York University. Last year I was involved in York Carnival with marketing and this year we are planning to make it bigger and more exciting than ever before.
Marketing Team
Hi, my name is Eleanor Jones. I am at the University of York and I’m in 3rd year student studying Psychology. At University, I play Lacrosse for the University Seconds team. I also enjoy going out in York and socialising with my mates. My specific role in the York Carnival is Marketing Representitive. My job is to publicise the Carnival at the Universities and in and around York itself. I aim to make sure as many people as possible know about the event, and encourage as many people as possible to come on the day, to make it a big success!
My name is Becky Round and I am a third year Psychology Student. At University I have been part of my Junior Common Room Committee, PsychSoc, Student Action and also mentored for a Charity called ‘The Island.’ I like to sing, run and do aerobics and I also love a bit of sunday night Gallery. I am one of the Marketing Assistants for the York Carnival. This involves roles such as sourcing a celebrity for the day, advertising the event e.g. contacting the media and ordering the merchandise.
Sophie Willis-Lee is a member of the 2010 marketing team. She is a first year student who studies history. Outside of the carnival committee she is also a member of the drama society. Sophie is enjoying marketing the Carnival and is excited about the day.
David Clarke is a second year Politics student from Langwith College. Originally from Derbyshire, David has experience in press work from placements with the Youth Hostels Association and the Peak District National Park and is also Environment and Ethics officer for the Students’ Union.

Schools Co-ordinator
Hi, I am Samantha, I am a second year English Literature student, and involved in several other societies on campus. I hold positions on two other committees, I am the Vice-Chair of English Soc and Social Secretary for Theatre-goers. I have been in three Pantsoc productions, choreographing one of them and regularly go on Kid’s Club. I am really excited about this year’s carnival!!
Community Groups Co-ordinator
Lisa Airey is a third year psychology student who has taken on the role of Community Outreach Co-ordinator. She will be liaising with community and youth groups to help bring people into the parade and on to the Youth Stage. She is keen to build closer links between both of York’s Universities and the community. An active volunteer in the local community, Lisa helps run a local Brownie Unit and is working towards her guiding leadership qualification. Alongside this, she volunteers for two York charities, SNAPPY and The Children’s Society PACT project. She also enjoys helping out in schools, through doing placements organised by the University’s YSIS scheme and teaching a recorder club at a York primary school.
Campus Projects Co-ordinator
Charlotte Hunter is a second year student studing Applied Social Science With Children And Young People. She is one of this years outreach coordinators for the different volunterring groups on campus. She has lots of experience in volunteering in schools through schemes such as York Students in School. She also is involved in university societies such as pantsoc where she has been in the last three pantomines and is currently rehersing for her fourth.

Events
Tom McCarthy is a second year student studying Politics. This is his first year working as part of the carnival team, and he is one of the five events co-ordinators. He has been heavily involved in many different university Societies before joining York Carnival; holding the role of Politics Society Vice President, as well as being on the Vanbrugh College Common Room Committee two years in a row, and being an active member of University Radio York, the University of York Concert Band and the University of York Big Band.
Rachael Robson is one of the Event Coordinators. She is in her first year of her undergraduate degree studying Management. Rachael is involved with the Student Action Lamel Bleeches project which visits elderly people each week; alongside she is also resides on the Management Society committee and undertakes the role of Social Secretary. Her role within the Carnival committee involves arranging the Carnival’s events and acts for the big day.
Danielle King is in her first year at the University of York and is studying management. It is the first year that she has been involved in the York carnival preparations and is thoroughly enjoying the process so far. It is also giving her experience in a field which she hopes to pursue in the future. As well as helping to organise the events for the carnival, she hasalso taken up many activities at the university including yoga, ballet and aerobics, she also has a part time job.
Jessica Lowe is on the events team for this year’s carnival. Jessica is in her first year at York University studying English Language and Linguistics. As well as being involved with York Carnival, Jessica is also a course representative for first year combined degree students in her department. She also writes and helps with advertising for the student newspaper, Nouse.
Peony Wong is currently in her second year studying Psychology at the University of York and is from Hong Kong. She is one of the event coordinators for York Carnival 2010 and is also the International Rep. of the James JCRC and the vice-chair of the Hong Kong Culture and Language Society. That’s what she does within the university. Outside it, she likes to read and cook. She thinks that her interests may bore you but believes our events on the day will certainly not. Come join York Carnival 2010!

Fundraising
Peggy McCoid Davies is a second year psychology student at the University of York. She is half of the fundraising team – which involves writing letters, filling in grant application forms and making phone calls to any one who may be interested in sponsoring the event. Aside from socialising and studying, she enjoys new music, tea, and making and eating snacks. When not in York, she lives in a small town near sunny Brighton.
Lottie Gammie is acting as one of the Fundraising Managers for York Carnival 2010. She is a second year History of Art student at the University of York, and has a keen interest in the arts and travel.
